Giving up smoking

Smoking is still the biggest cause of premature death and illness in the UK and we want to help people give up. There are number of smoking cessation schemes in Stoke-on-Trent, we are currently advising our patients to contact NHS Stop Smoking by calling 0300 123 1044 or go online at smokefree.nhs.uk to obtain information about the Quit Smoking Service.

What do I need to do next?

Please contact the surgery reception team either by telephone or via reception and inform them that you have had a positive home pregnancy test. The receptionist will book a telephone appointment with our Advanced Nurse Practitioner team to discuss a prescription for Folic Acid supplements. You will be provided with the telephone number for the Community Midwife Team for you to contact them directly.

Do I need an appointment at the practice to confirm the pregnancy?

No – it is practice policy that you do not need to confirm the pregnancy with a nurse or GP appointment. Home pregnancy testing kits now provide the same level of accuracy as a test provided at the surgery, we therefore do not need to repeat the test at the surgery. However, if you have any pregnancy related problems or concerns you are welcome to contact the practice for further guidance and support.

Holidays abroad to exotic, and not so exotic locations are becoming a way of life for many people. However some trips do pose health risks which can be minimised by appropriate protection and taking precautions. Our travel health service is led by the practice nurses who can give advice on what immunisations might be needed and medication for trips anywhere in the world. They can administer the immunisations at the surgery including Yellow Fever (please be aware there is fee payable for Yellow fever vaccination). Please remember that while the surgery can advise about which anti-malarial drugs you may need, we do not prescribe these drugs. They can be obtained from a pharmacy.

Moorcroft Medical Centre is an accredited yellow fever centre. This service is available to non-registered patients. However please note that as this is not an NHS service a fee will be payable.

It is absolutely essential that you plan in advance – you may well need a course of injections over a period of a few weeks to gain full protection prior to travelling.

Cervical Smears form an important part of the cervical screening process. Cervical screening can be used to help detect and treat early abnormalities within the cervix. It is a free test which all women between the ages of 25 and 64 are eligible for and should be repeated approximately every 3 to 5 years depending on your age.

The practice offers cervical smear appointments with our nursing team and can be booked through reception.

Please try to attend for your smear as this can be an important part of the early detection and treatment process.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this screening, please let us know and our nursing team will be happy to talk to you about this.

The practice offers a contraception service. This includes oral contraceptives, injectable contraception (depo provera), contraceptive implants and emergency contraception. Also remember that some pharmacies supply emergency contraception. In any event if you are unsure about what service you require or would like further information, please contact the surgery for advice and support.

Immunisations are important as they are a way of protecting your child against serious disease. Once immunised a child can fight these diseases if they come into contact with them. Your child will need to be immunised and protected from disease at the following intervals.

  • Two months old
  • Three months old
  • Four months old
  • 12 to 13 months old
  • Three years and four months to five years old
  • Between 13 to 18 years given by the School Health Service

Clinics are held each week with our practice nurse team and an appointment for your child’s immunisations or a reminder will be sent to you through the post and you can book at a time convenient to you. Please feel free to ask us any questions that you may have regarding your child’s immunisations.
